96 PTS IN WINE ADVOCATE #228 (DEC 2016)
“The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, which is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot, and the rest Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, was aged 23 months in French oak. It has an opaque purple/black color and rich crème de cassis and blackberry fruit as well as some charcoal and graphite. Full-bodied, impressive, and a truly compelling example of Cabernet Sauvignon, this should hit its stride in another 4-5 years and last for three decades or more. It is extra special…”

“…the buzz around here was that we were witnessing the birth of Napa’s newest “cult” wine…What a hedonistic wine: this is built for pleasure-seekers! Due to its ripe and polished style, drinking now will absolutely delight…This is a “big night” style of wine for luxurious main-course proteins—it can handle whatever you throw at it, that’s for sure. Enjoy!

One of our top tier wines in our portfolio, this limited-production of 765 cases represents the pinnacle of Hertelendy winemaking and exhibits elegance, power, and complexity. Our fruit sources improved from 2013. In 2014, we acquired our “Rockwell Ridge” Estate Vineyard on Howell Mountain (23 year old vines at 1365 feet elevation), and blended our grapes with other premium Bordeaux varietals from pristine, mature, mountainside vineyards on Pritchard Hill, Atlas Peak, and the Silverado foothills. All of the varietals were double sorted and underwent a long maceration. Aged for 23 months in 90% new French oak, character and structure was obtained without overpowering the natural essence of our fruit. Grown only on the eastern hillsides of Napa Valley, one may be able to discern the tuffaceous volcanic soil that is very prevalent in this unique terroir.
GROWING SEASON AND HARVEST
Similar to the 2013 season, 2014 offered fantastic growing conditions. We experienced exceptional weather during bloom and an early fruit set once again on our hillside slopes in the Napa Valley. As the year progressed, summer temperatures were idyllic, ensuring great hang time and no significant stress on the vines. With such optimal climate, and rain not a concern (as it was a drought year), we were able to wait and harvest exactly when we wanted, resulting in ultra-premium, perfectly ripened fruit with great balance, acidity, and concentration.
This refined Cabernet Sauvignon combines bold, mountainside structure with ethereal finesse, purity, and sophistication. Intense aromas of dark cherry liqueur, blackcurrant, wild boysenberry, and ripe apricots are intricately laced with notes of anise, crème de cassis, graphite, espresso crème brûlée, and a touch of cocoa powder. The incredibly dense palate offers an elegant, velvety mouth feel, which culminates beautifully with pitch-perfect acidity, balance, and luxurious opulence. The complex array of these exotic nuances continue to evolve within the textural expansiveness, resulting in a long lasting climax, and a full expression of modern style Cabernet which is sure to intrigue the senses.
